Worldwide, the demand for nuts – hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds and pistachios – is growing exponentially, due to the confectionery industry’s use of these products by offering customers attractive innovations, in light of the many health-promoting properties of these fruits.

The Ferrero company, the world market leader, with consumption of around 50% of global production, is promoting new large plants so that it can cope with the strong increase in demand in the future.

Tonda Gentile hazelnut plant in its third year

Why grow hazelnut?

The hazelnut is a crop that adapts well to different types of terrain and production areas, but due to its nature, it is necessary to take into consideration not only the long time it takes to reach production but also possible agronomic problems.

Requiring a period of about four to five years to come into production and with a potential ranging from 25 to 40 quintals per hectare, it is not easy to meet the ever-increasing demand for the product.

The cultivation of hazelnuts certainly has great potential, as despite the strong increase in plantings worldwide, with settlements in new areas (China, Oregon, Australia, Eastern Europe,…) and several other states worldwide where suitability for cultivation has been established, worldwide production is not growing.

This is undoubtedly due to many plants becoming senescent (over 40/50 years old) and losing production capacity, with particular reference to Turkey, which accounts for over 50% of world production.

In Turkey, many plants have not been modernised in the past years and its climate, which is exposed to northern currents that can cause late frosts, does not allow constant production.

The type of terrain, and obsolete facilities where it is almost impossible to implement a modern cultivation technique, do not allow a valuable product to be obtained; in fact, problems often arise in the form of spoilage, bugs and the presence of aflatoxins.
