Coriliculture is increasingly evolving on large plots in specialised professional farms, but there is evidence of how profitable investment on small plots can be in order to bring in income from land not otherwise exploitable.
Aim for family hazelnut planting for higher income
- Plant set up to minimise investment in specific equipment
- Dense planting to anticipate entry into production
- Planting pattern, approx. 1000 plants per hectare for optimised harvesting
- Placement of mulching cloth on the row to avoid any tilling in the under-row and encourage plant development.
This planting protocol excludes all forms of weeding and chemical fertilisation. It therefore allows for a certified organic product, which has great potential for commercial exploitation.
COSTS OF CARRYING OUT FAMILY PLANTING OF HAZEL
- Cutting or ripping (operation can be carried out by contractors), € 700;
- Planting: 2-3 year old plants or pot plants € 5 cad x 1000 plants = € 5,000; one-year plants € 4 cad x 1000 plants = € 4,000
- Potting soil and fertiliser, € 0.50 each x 1000 = € 500
- Mulching with agritelo € 1,350
- Fertilisation cost € 350 /year
- Phytosanitary treatments (at 5th year) € 600
Total cost of hazel planting and management up to year 5: € 9,900

REVENUE FROM CORE PLANT EXECUTION
Over the past five years, the price has fluctuated between 3 and 5 euro per kg with an average of €4.00.
In the profit and loss account, 3 euro per kg is conservatively taken into account.
For the BIO product there is currently a 20% surcharge.
REVENUE AT 4TH YEAR: half a kilo per plant x 1000 = € 1,500
REVENUE TO 5/6 YEAR: 2 kg per plant x 1000 = € 6,000
RECOVERY FROM YEAR 7: 3/3.5 kg per plant x 1000 = € 9,000/10,500
COSTS/REVENUES FAMILY HAZEL PLANT
From the projection COSTS/REVENUES the production will even out the expenses incurred since the start of the plant.
The gross revenue will be 8-12 thousand euros per year/hectare.
